Hayborough puts open plan living in the right spot

When Chris and Keith Cummings moved into their new home in Marsh, they didn't have far to go. The Goolwa couple moved from the town's main street to a new block near the river, a distance of just six blocks. "We've always lived in Goolwa, apart from a little while about 20 years ago when we were in Adelaide," Chris said. "The river and the ocean make Goolwa a lovely little spot to live."

The Cummings chose the Hayborough 3E from Sarah Homes mainly for its large, open-plan living area and wrap-around deck. "We really liked the inside-outside living," Chris said. "I also loved the light because there were lots of big windows." The Hayborough is a transportable home, clad in Hardiplank. "I guess it is transportable, since it's on brick pillars, but we didn't care if it was brick or not," Chris said. "We just liked the design."

She said her favourite parts of the house were the living-dining and kitchen area and the main bedroom. The main bedroom has a sliding door out onto the deck and a big ensuite bathroom. Nearby, the second and third bedrooms are just steps from the main bathroom, which has a full-size bath and glassed-in shower alcove. The kitchen has a combination of charcoal, white and red panelling. The island bench houses the sink and dishwasher and a breakfast bar.

Chris has brought her own distinctive style to the house and garden, brightening the neutral floors and walls with bright splashes of colour. Feature walls in spicy shades of red bring life to the main bedroom, living room and kitchen. Combining with reds are dark leather couches and a dark wood dining suits, which gave the Cummings' home a modern, Japanese feel. The black futon-style bed and embroidered cushions and quilt cover in the main bedroom add to Asian flavour, as do the pebble paths and red fence panels in the garden.

"I spent a bit of time looking through magazines to get ideas," Chris said. "Red and black were the in colours when we were decorating and I knew I wanted a lot of brightness and colour in the house." Part of the decking is already covered, but Chris and Keith have ordered a new veranda that they hope will be finished in time for Christmas.
