Timing was everything for this young family
making a sea change with Sarah Homes

WORDS Trisha Helbers PHOTOGRAPHY Nick Clayton

Although their wedding is looming, Will Mills and Anita Boon are more focused on their love affair with their new home. When the couple first met four years ago, it looked a foregone conclusion they would fall in love. "People always have a laugh about our surnames," Will says. "All the people we've dealt with for our upcoming wedding have said you're joking. "The wedding is coming up but we're still focused on our new home. It was a bit nerveracking building for the first time, but Sarah Homes were great and we are really happy with the end result."

The couple loved the open spaces and outdoor decking of the design they chose. "After we signed up Sarah Homes finished building aWhiteley 2 Storey as a display home.We kept going back to look at it over the year that our home was being built. It was really exciting to walk through our plan and imagine our own place." The ground floor houses all three secondary bedrooms, a three-way bathroom and a laundry with outside access.

A large, central living space is spacious and light-filled,with glass sliding doors opening to a generous veranda under the upper-storey deck. There is also understair storage. Upstairs, the main bedroom is located to one side of the second level and includes a large built-in wardrobe and stylish ensuite with a double shower. A toilet with separate vanity is adjacent. The modern kitchen has an island bench and breakfast bar, overhead cupboard for handy storage and stainless steel appliances.

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living space is floodedwith natural light, with expansive windows and two glass sliding doors opening on to awide timber deck, ideal for outdoor entertaining. "It all just works for us," Will says. "Our mates from the city often come up on a Friday night and stay the weekend to go surfing, and we have visitors from overseas.

"There's plenty of room, and they have their own living room downstairs, so you never feel like you're all on top of each other. "And, down the track, there's plenty of space for children, and we'll have our space upstairs, with our bedroom up here." Will says they splurged on hardwood floors and the deck. "We went for the extra 3m-width on our living room side and expanded our undercover area. We now have about 80 per cent of the deck under cover, which is perfect for entertaining all year round." The couple also flipped the standard plan, from left to right upstairs, to make the best use of the view, and also from front to back downstairs, to bring the main entrance to the street side.

With the house situated only 400m from the beach,Will says the glass windows and doors opening to the deck and the sea beyond are the home's best feature. "We don't need paintings," he says. "The views are the home's artwork."
