As a drawcard in new homes, kitchens often boast stunning modern appliances and stylish finishes from benchtop to splashback.
As the trend for a clean, slimline kitchen continues, the modern sink has all but disappeared, with the desirable look to install an undermount sink with no sight of a side drainer.
‘‘The undermount kitchen sink is the hot trend in kitchen decor these days,’’ says Sarah Homes marketing manager Lee Goddard.
‘‘The sink is recessed under the benchtop for a unique result, with a smooth-edge surface giving the counter top a stylish, seamless appearance.
‘‘It has minimalist appeal, which is great in the contemporary kitchen.’’ Unlike their traditional counterparts, undermount sinks can only be installed in stone or Laminex Freestyle acrylic benchtops, as water can damage the particle board of laminate structures.
Sarah Homes’ Cullen 2 design has a double undermount sink in stainless steel with large, deep bowls for washing-up convenience.
As well as looking neat, seamless edges make it easier to keep the counter top clean. ‘‘With traditional sinks, dirt and food particles collect in the rim, which can be difficult to clean and is less hygienic,’’ says Lee.
‘‘Without the need for a dedicated drainer on the side, there is more of the benchtop that can be utilised.
‘‘The drainer accessory and others fit beautifully over or into the sink, which really allows you to maximise space.’’
Other add-on accessories include chopping boards and utility trays which create extra food preparation space and cover the sink when not in use.
A goose-neck mixer with pin lever adds to the sleek and simple look. With a range of mixer designs available, it can become a feature of the room and reflect shapes of other fittings, such as cabinetry handles.
Including the sink in an island bench also makes for easy entertaining.
