Plenty of living space and room for the future was
key to this custom beach-style design by Sarah Homes

Creating a spacious retreat for their growing family was top priority for Ian Murphy and Kerrie Davis when
they decided to build their new home.
"Our 11-metre-wide block is really narrow, so we had to build up to maximise space,’’ Kerrie says.
"I actually designed the home myself, but when we took it to Sarah Homes they made lots of great suggestions towards the design."
The plan includes large bedrooms for children Chris, 10 and Caitlin, 12 on the first floor, with walk-in-wardrobes providing access to a central ensuite.
"The kids are getting older now and they’re at the age where they’re having more sleepovers with their friends,’’ Kerrie says."We wanted to have enough space for them to do that."
The main bedroom is also upstairs and has access to a private balcony, while a kitchenette in an open lounge room creates a self-contained retreat for the family.
"The upstairs living area is mainly used as a PlayStation and Wii retreat for the kids, while the downstairs lounge is for TV, and the family room is for sitting and chatting," Kerrie says. "We use the upstairs kitchenette all the time so we don’t have to travel up and down the stairs with hot drinks.
"We just love having our coffees up on the balcony every morning when we get up."
A fourth bedroom to the front of the ground level is used for guests and visiting family. "We often host family from interstate," Kerrie says. "We wanted to have enough room in the house so that we don’t feel like we were on top of each other"’
With guests in mind, Ian and Kerrie also included a central combined laundry and bathroom on the ground floor, which can be accessed both internally and externally.
The open-plan kitchen on the ground floor at the rear of the home leads to the dining and family areas. "The kitchen also has external access, which is great for entertaining," she says. "You can go outside and put things straight on to the barbecue."
