Replacing their ageing holiday home with a new design from Sarah Homes has this family smiling

Building a weekend getaway that could cater to their expanding family was the focus for retirees Bernie and Marie Donohue. With their humble and well-loved seaside escape falling down before their eyes, the couple had to make the choice to renovate or knock down and re-build.
"The old home had been taking a battering and panels were starting to fall off," Marie says. "We had put it off for a long time because we couldnít quite find the right house to fit our block. But then we read an article in Home magazine about someone who built with Sarah Homes and reversed their design. We realised thatís exactly what we needed."
With views to the sea from the front and the hills at the back they maximised their vistas with a large front balcony and smaller one at the rear.
"The balcony at the back leads off the kitchen and itís a great option to enjoy the viewswhen there is a blustery southerly blowing as it is well protected," Marie says. "We put a clothesline out there so we donít have to walk downstairs to hang things out all the time. We added extra windows so we have views from most aspects of the home."
On the ground floor are two bedrooms, main bathroom, kitchenette and a large living area. Upstairs houses the main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. It has direct access to the balcony via sliding glass doors.
A separate bathroom sits next to the staircase with the kitchen on the other side including benchtop with breakfast bar and induction cooktop.
"Our idea is when all the family come over, the grandchildren can enjoy themselves in their own space watching television or playing downstairs while the adults can sit up top and relax and do our thing," Marie says.
"Itís also great being so close to the beach because the children are old enough to walk down by themselves and we can stand on the cliff and keep an eye on them. "ĎThe problem we have now is we love this house so much weíre spending more time here than we do at home."
