It was all about capturing the feeling of a relaxed beach lifestyle for Anthony and Penelope McKenzie when they decided on their two-storey Sarah home.
The couple also wanted to move to a coastal location as their boys, Tom, 13, and Jake, 16, are involved in surf lifesaving. The family’s favourite area, the 8m by 6m wooden deck, which is located directly over the double garage, has already proved popular for barbecues with friends and family in summertime.
"The deck with the beautiful view is the main attraction for us," says Anthony. "It is quite a small block and we wanted to get as much outdoor living space as we could. That was one of the main reasons for settling on this design. The look, space and floor plan of this design is what we wanted."
The home provides plenty of space for all the family. The boys’ bedrooms, which both feature built-in robes, are located downstairs. The ground level also includes a spare bedroom, which has been converted into a study, a bathroom, laundry and a spacious living area. A pool table is located here, and gives the boys their own place to hang out with friends while the adults entertain upstairs. Anthony says creating a separate space for his sons, that can be closed off when the need arises, was an important consideration. "They can have friends around and play downstairs and we can have the adults upstairs in the openplan area or on the deck," he says.
The main bedroom, with a built-in robe and a generous ensuite, is located off the living and kitchen area upstairs.
"We like the open–plan area so we can flow directly from the deck to the sitting and dining areas," says Anthony.
Easy maintenance and hard-wearing materials were also a necessity, he says. With a sandy beach nearby and two boys running around with their friends, it was important that cleaning up would not take up valuable relaxation time.
"We chose the timber veneer flooring and the industrial carpet, so if there are any spills we can easily clean it up," Anthony says. "We opted for hard-wearing stuff, as the boys are also sort of hard-wearing."
